How Do We Stop – The Science behind It

13When a body is moving, it has kinetic energy. This means that the body has both mass and velocity. The greater the mass of the body, the greater will be its speed and hence, kinetic energy.
When this body has to stop, it will have to lose its kinetic energy. For instance, when jumping from an airplane, your kinetic energy is incredible and to lower it down (and save your life), you need a parachute—and hence, a brake.

About Types of Car Brakes

Normally, cars have three types of braking systems. Let’s have a look at them:

Disc Brake

This type of brake system is quite similar to the one seen in bicycles. When you step on the brake pedal, a resilient material clamps on the disc and uses friction to decrease the car’s speed and eventually brings it to a halt.

Drum Brakes

While some cars may be using disc brakes for all four wheels, some have drum brakes for rear wheels. In place of the disc, these brake systems employ shoes that press outward and stop the car using friction.

Handbrake

This is located between the front seats of a car. When you pull the lever, it applies brake to the rear wheels of a car.

How Car Brake System Works

14You might have thought how a fast-moving car can be halted by just a push from your foot. This is made possible by hydraulics – fluid-filled pipes that have the power to multiply force from your foot and transmit it through the system quickly.
When your foot pushes the brake pedal, it moves a lever that, in turn, pushes a piston into the long, narrow cylinder of hydraulic fluid.
The plunge of the lever forces the fluid to move towards much bigger cylinders that are placed towards your car’s four brakes. These wider cylinders mean that the force your foot initially applied is now multiplied greatly. And that’s how a car stops.
